The Vigenère cipher combines several Caesar shifts that change letter by letter, based on a secret keyword you choose. With the keyword "GOLD," for example, the first letter of your message shifts by G, the second by O, and so on, looping the keyword as needed.
First described in the 16th century and popularized by diplomat Blaise de Vigenère, this cipher earned the nickname "le chiffre indéchiffrable" — the indecipherable cipher. It took over 300 years before mathematicians found a reliable way to crack it without knowing the keyword.
